Multi-grid discretization of the wave spectrum for the real-time numerical simulation of the sea surface in Computer Graphics

The paper presents a new discretization methodology of the wave spectrum for numerical real-time simulations of the sea surface. Although very realistic, most of the times multispectral ocean scenes for real-time 3D Computer Graphics, based on real wave spectra, do not exhibit the statistical properties of the original sea state. Consequently, the original and the simulated sea states are not equivalent. For applications where the correctness of sea surface height field plays an important role, such as professional training 3D ship simulators, this may be unacceptable. A new method is proposed, which allows obtaining a sea state statistically more equivalent to the one defined by the original wave spectrum. Additionally, the new method may even improve the real-time performance and the visual realism of the scene. The impact on the physical accuracy of the sea state, on the performance, and on the quality of the rendered image, is examined and discussed.
