Recent advances in optical storage using optical volumetric memory have provided for the storage and readout of data in parallel page-oriented form. Several approaches have been proposed for the associative/content-based retrieval of text and imagery. This paper presents several optical data storage methods and proposed techniques for associative/content-based retrieval using optical correlation, optical neural networks, and opto-electronic/integrated optics implementations.
