Four different metaphors of information technologies are investigated for appropriate understanding of human-computer interaction. These four metaphors can help understand different types of e-commerce. The contexts that are compatible to each metaphor are identified by critical review of activity theory and action theory. Appropriate IS research disciplines and perspectives are discussed according to each different metaphor. (56 words).
