A performance assessment was carried out to assess the suitability of the 3rd generation mobile communication link for application in a system for navigation of visually impaired pedestrians. The aim of the navigation system is to increase the mobility of visually impaired pedestrians via remote guidance by a sighted person. In the 3G link performance assessment, tests were concentrated on the main 3G link characteristics: bandwidth, latency, link outages and packet losses. These link characteristics directly influence the navigation system performance.
