Abstract: Information and distribution systems make valuable contributions in improving the retail industry. Multimedia technologies and broadband networks pave the way for new generations of information and distribution systems. Characteristics of the store and consumer environments together with the driving forces in the retail industry put great demands upon the systems. Middleware has a key role in fulfilling the demands.
