Corporate IS standards policies affect the communication cost among individuals and teams in organizations. This paper models the effect of information systems standards policies on information flow costs and investigates the potential impact of organizational communication structures on the value of IS standards. We show that communication in conventional hierarchies benefit more from a standards policy than team organizations. Hierarchies with very small or very large span (or level) receive less value from mandated standards.
