In the complex work environments of modern industrial and administrative organisations, the problems of articulating distributed activities are at a high order of complexity: both high flexibility and performance are needed. The design of adaptive systems can provide a suitable solution to these problems. Adaptability is supported at two levels using both the principles and methodologies of the integrated knowledge based systems and the distributed artificial intelligence systems.
