For efficient storage and transmission of volumetric data, compression algorithms are imperative. Three dimensional discrete wavelet transform (3D-DWT) shows its advantages in the volumetric data compression for its perfect reconstruction and its lack of blocking artifact. In this paper, a novel three dimensional combinational lifting algorithm (3D-CLA) using 9/7 filter that calculates the 3D-DWT directly is proposed. The algorithm achieves one level decomposition through five stages, which have similar and regular structure. The algorithm can be implemented in-place for efficient use of memory, and can save more than 44% of the total number of multiplication than conventional approaches
