Multimodality on mobile terminals has been relegated to very high-end terminals, not spread among normal people. Nevertheless, the evolution of the technologies allows a deployment of synergic multimodal application on smartphones. We have studied how it is possible to build multimodal clients on mobile handsets, using an innovative approach based on what we have called multimodal objects, trying to explore limitations and constraints of the J2ME programming environment. We report in this paper our experience and the results of our research.
