Measurement of network traffic is a fundamental issue to manage the network itself. The highly self-similar nature of IP traffic makes its measurement and profiling a very complex task. In this paper we identify a number of dimensions over which we can measure and profile IP traffic flows. We propose a set of statistics that can be used on the identified dimensions and allow the definition of traffic profile models.
