The authors will describe, based on their respective experiences, a novel communication architecture to be utilized in mission-critical realtime applications for electric systems operations.

The paper will illustrate how electric utilities can obtain an efficient and flexible utilization of the Digital Power Line Carrier (DPLC) technology with the narrow-band Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) switching technology, implementing an innovative WAN for the internal requirements of vital operational communications.
