The method presented in this paper has two noteworthy aspects. First, in order to improve segmentation quality, sub-pixel interpolation using quadratic curve fitting is performed. Second, adaptive widow for thresholding is done in a novel way. The variance of gray value in each widow is used both for widow size choosing and grayscale thresholding. Experiment results show that this segmentation algorithm is suitable for treating document images of uneven lighting.
