In this paper we present an approach to recognize an SOS request through a video surveillance equipment. This project is intended to help the human surveillance operators in outdoor environment. We have fixed a rule to define an SOS request typical in nonverbal communication: a person must vary the space occupied in the environment and must look the camera when executes the SOS request. To recognize an SOS request the system evaluates three parameters: variation of the occupation time area, variation of the shape center coordinate and the length of the alert condition. Results and discussions on several sequences show the effectiveness.
