MPEG standards, instrumental in shaping the multimedia landscape since the early 1990s, are taking another step forward with MPEG-A, which specifies multimedia application formats. MAFs are essentially superformats that combine selected technology components from MPEG (and other) standards to provide greater application interoperability, which helps satisfy users' growing need for better-integrated multimedia solutions.
