The Plan B operating system combines the traditional file system interface with a sensible interface design for devices and services to improve machine interoperation and provide the new abstractions and services required by ubiquitous environments. The Plan B remote-file-system import mechanism lets the system adapt to environment changes and lets users customize the environment according to their needs. Researchers at the Universidad Rey Juan Carlos have used the system for more than a year, both for daily work and for implementing a smart space that includes machines running the Plan B, Plan 9, Windows, Symbian, and Linux operating systems.
