Portable educational network (PEN) systems provide several advantages over permanent, fixed classrooms. They let students experiment with new, untested computer programs, view malicious code, execute network attacks, penetrate enterprise servers, and other such activities. PENs are in use today at several universities in support of undergraduate, graduate, and professional education in topics that have heretofore required specialized laboratories.
