We are developing a VizGrid system, a teleimmersive collaboration environment on a grid infrastructure. With increased collaboration among researchers from multiple research fields, highly sophisticated support tools for remote collaboration become essential. The VizGrid system?s goal is to develop these tools; it is an integrated environment consisting of a real time information sharing system between remotely located researchers and a threedimensional (3D) image-based real-time communication system. To evaluate the system?s functionality and performance, we have used it for real research problems in the medical and nuclear fusion areas. We have developed a prototype system of the teleimmersive collaboration environment in VizGrid. This paper describes the current research and development status of the prototype of volume communication environment.
