This paper describes our proposed power management schemes, directional local recovery and dynamic power management, to reduce and balance power consumption. We introduce the power variance as a metric to evaluate the performance of power balancing. Using ns-2 and the Ad hoc On-Demand Distance Vector Routing (AODV) protocol, we compare the performance of AODV with our extension against the original AODV. Simulation results show that our schemes provide substantial energy savings and thus prolong the battery life of mobile nodes while introducing limited increase in end-to-end delay.
