The rapid growth of wireless networks and services, integrated with the next-generation mobile communication systems, has led to designing efficient handoff protocols to handle mobility. Several solutions have been proposed. In this paper, we propose the Micro Mobile MPLS scheme which is a practical approach to support local mobility for MPLS. We also propose a Fast Handoff process in Micro Mobile MPLS. We demonstrate through simulations, that the use of pre-established LSPs in the foreign domain allows the Micro Mobile MPLS scheme to achieve Fast Handoff and reduce packet loss per handoff. The entire scheme is performed within a hierarchical topology based on next-generation IP networks. Simulations results also show that our scheme is more efficient, in terms of packet loss and handoff delay, than the other most prominent micromobility protocols such as: Cellular IP, Hawaii and MIP-RR.
