The IEEE Computer Society’s technical magazines and journals saw their influence grow significantly over the last year, with impact factor increases reported throughout the Society’s stable of high-quality, peer-reviewed technical publications. IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis & Machine Intelligence was ranked No. 1 in electrical engineering and artificial intelligence, was one of the top-10-ranked computer science titles, and was the overall top-ranked IEEE and Computer Society journal.

NASA Software Expert to Speak at Space Conference

IEEE Computer Society to Launch New Journal

1 July, 2009

The IEEE Computer Society next year will introduce a new journal covering affective computing, an active and growing field that embraces human-computer interaction, artificial intelligence, cognitive science, and signal processing. The online-only IEEE Transactions on Affective Computing will launch initially as a biannual publication, moving to quarterly the following year.

Computer Society to Refresh SWEBOK Guide

IEEE Computer Society volunteers are gearing up to refresh the Guide to the Software Engineering Body of Knowledge (SWEBOK), adding new knowledge areas and revising others to align the guide with current curriculum and industry practices. The refresh, set for a mid-2010 release, is intended to bring the SWEBOK Guide in closer alignment with IEEE Computer Society certification programs, further define software engineering as a profession, and help bridge the gap between industry and academia.

IEEE Announces Winners of Global Student Competition

IEEE, the world's largest technical professional association, today announced the winners of its inaugural IEEE Presidents' Change the World Competition. The competition recognizes students who developed unique solutions to real-world problems using engineering, science, computing and leadership skills to benefit their community and/or humanity as a whole. It is part of the IEEE 125th anniversary celebration.

The IEEE has ratified IEEE 802.1Qay, the industry’s first packet-based connection-oriented Ethernet technology for next-generation service provider transport networks. IEEE P802.1Qay was sponsored by the IEEE 802 Standards Committee of the IEEE Computer Society.

Rice Computer Scientist Wins Wallace-McDowell Award

Rice University computer scientist Krishna Palem, who also heads the Institute of Sustainable Nanoelectronics (ISNE) at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore, has won the prestigious 2008 W. Wallace McDowell Award for his pioneering contributions to the growing field of embedded computing. The W. Wallace McDowell Award has a list of past winners that reads like a who's who of industry giants.

IEEE Computer Society President Susan K. (Kathy) Land has confirmed the appointment of editors in chief whose two-year terms begin 1 January, 2010. The EICs’ terms run through 31 December, 2011.

IEEE Computer Society Launches Corporate Initiative

The IEEE Computer Society has launched an outreach campaign called Raise Your Standards targeted at technology professionals and the corporations who hire them. The initiative’s message will be communicated via nine video vignettes on You Tube, MySpace, and SecondLife, as well as via http://raiseyourstandards.org and a DVD distributed at conferences and tradeshows.

Board Approves 2010 Candidates

The IEEE Computer Society Board of Governors has approved the slate of candidates for 2010 leadership positions. Sorel Reisman and Jon Rokne will vie for the position of 2010 Computer Society president. Roger Fujii and Don Shafer will compete for first vice president. Sattupatha Sankaran and Jeffrey Voas are running for the position of second vice president.

Industry Advisory Board Picks New Members

The Industry Advisory Board has selected three new members and will be focusing on how the IEEE Computer Society can better serve high-technology companies. The new members include Tony Hey, corporate vice president of the External Research Division at Microsoft Research; Tirumale K. Ramesh, a Boeing Technical Fellow and Chief Technologist-AMSE Virtual Operations; and Henry Tirri, senior vice president and head of Nokia Research Center.

  • CP2010 conference seeks to create an interactive forum for computing-related practitioners, educators, standards developers, regulatory organizations, industrial users, and researchers to share their expertise and knowledge in discussions of professional strength strategies for succeeding in a rapidly changing technical, economic, and social environment.
    The Conference provides an opportunity for Computing Professionals to engage and interact to stretch their professional perspectives, learn what works now, and bring added value to themselves as professionals and their organizations.
